It is a common misconception that “sprain” and “strain” are interchangeable terms. In reality, there are some key differences between the two. In order to understand how they differ, it is important to first understand what ligaments and tendons are.
Ligaments connect bones to bones within a joint, while tendons connect bones to muscles. When you experience a sprain, you are tearing or overstretching a ligament. Conversely, when you experience a strain, you are tearing or overstretching a tendon.

For example, if a person is unable to walk, for whatever reason, physical therapy helps that patient get back to the point where they are able to walk again. Physical therapy; however, is not meant to help that patient take that next step, such as if a patient now wants to a couple of miles each day, or, better yet, get to jogging as a part of a good daily health plan. That next step, where a person has daily confidence in their body and is also looking to get even better, is up to the patient to find on their own.
