In one of my last blogs, I went over my top 3 exercises for dealing with back pain in a home office setting. But if we take a step back for a second, what you’ll find is that we can and should be trying to stop back pain before it even starts to creep up. As we have all been working more from home, my patients have been finding that they are actually more sedentary than when they were in their normal offices. Much of this can be attributed to more “alone time” at a desk at home with less interaction with fellow co-workers, in addition to smaller work spaces with easier and closer access to amenities such as bathrooms, kitchens, etc. All of this leads to less overall movement during a workday.

In these unprecedented times, with more people than ever either staying home or working from a home office, there has been a big increase in back pain with my patients and many requests for recommendations for exercises to reduce pain. Much of this has to do not only with working from home, but also combined with the fact that less people are getting their regular exercise due to the current pandemic situation.

In this time of stress, we have noticed a significant increase in back pain issues in our physical therapy patients as more time has been spent at home. Although we’ve had more time at home to spend with our families, many have not been able to stay as active as before, leading to stiffness and pain. And even now, when more and more are finally starting to get back outside, there is still a lot of back pain from being home for this extended period of time.
